April is many things, including Oral Cancer Awareness Month. We are mentioning this because it is another reason for you to make an appointment at our Colorado Springs, CO dental office.
Get a Screening With Your Cleaning
When you make an appointment for a dental cleaning and exam, you also can get an oral cancer screening for a small fee. We use the OralID® to screen your mouth for any signs that you may need to talk to your personal physician.
Perform a Self-Check
If you are between dental appointments, you also can perform a self-check. You will need bright light and a mirror. If you have dentures, remove them before you begin. Look for patches of discolored soft tissue (red, white, or a combination of the two) and feel for lumps on your lips, cheeks, or neck.
Reduce Your Risk
If you use tobacco, you should quit. Tobacco use is the leading risk factor for developing oral cancers. Heavy alcohol use also raises your risk of developing this kind of cancer. Limiting or eliminating alcohol can make a difference.
Early detection makes a big difference in the success of oral cancer treatment. When treatment begins in the early stages, the survival rate is 80 to 90 percent.
