When Surgery Can Help
How do you know when a dental surgery could help you? Here are some reasons:
- You need to rebuild your jaw.
When you lose teeth, bone loss in your jaw is a consequence. As you lose bone, that can make it more difficult to get dental implants to support replacement teeth. A bone graft can rebuild your lost bone tissue so you secure implants. With implants, you can restore the function of your teeth replacements and prevent additional bone loss.
- You need to strengthen your bone.
Sometimes bone loss is not the problem. Sometimes that natural structure of your facial bones is not conducive to securing implants. Ridge augmentation is a type of bone graft that can make your bone stronger.
- You need to remove teeth.
Tooth extractions may be our most common surgical procedure. There are multiple reasons that you may need to take out one or more teeth. First, you could have a tooth that is severely damaged or infected. To be clear, we would prefer to save a tooth whenever we can. When the tooth is too weak, however, it’s better to remove and replace it.
Second, you may need to take out a tooth so you can complete another treatment. For younger patients, this could mean taking out teeth that are causing crowding. By getting rid of those teeth, they can complete orthodontic care more easily. For patients who are missing multiple teeth, but have a few remaining, it may be easier to take out the last teeth so they can get complete teeth replacements.
Wisdom teeth removal is among the most common tooth extractions. Wisdom teeth can cause a number of problems, largely because most people don’t have enough room in their jaws for these teeth to erupt correctly. That can cause wisdom teeth to become impacted, which can put pressure on nearby teeth and create a greater risk of cavities, gum disease, and other issues.
